RACIAL DISCORD IS FANNED

It is sad that recent incidents are being exploited to such an extent that racial discord is fanned in the process.  After a series of events towards the end of last year, as well as recent statements, including that of the Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission, it is clear that a deliberate provocation of emotions against whites across a wide front is developing, says Mr Paul van der Walt, President of TAU SA.

The result of this is a marked deterioration of the security situation which could lead to irresponsible actions and consequent reprisals.  The detrimental effect of power failures on security systems, is contributing to the worsening situation.

Mr Van der Walt calls upon the President, Mr Mbeki as well as senior political leaders, to urge their followers to remain calm and to respect the law.  Law abiding citizens are however encouraged to increase security precautions and awareness of possible threats.

RASSESPANNING WORD AANGEBLAAS

Dit is baie jammer dat sekere insidente tot so mate uitgebuit word dat rassespanning in die proses aangeblaas word.  Na aanleiding van 'n reeks gebeure sedert die einde van verlede jaar en onlangse uitsprake, onder andere deur die Voorsitter van die Menseregtekommissie, is dit duidelik dat daar 'n doelgerigte aanhitsing van emosies teen blankes oor 'n breë front aan die ontwikkel is, sê mnr Paul van der Walt, President van TLU SA.

Die gevolg hiervan is 'n beduidende verslegting in die veiligheidsklimaat wat tot onverantwoordelike optredes en vergelding kan lei.  Die feit dat die huidige kragonderbrekings 'n uiters negatiewe uitwerking op sekuriteitstelsels mag hê, dra verswarend hiertoe by.

Mnr van der Walt doen 'n ernstige beroep op die President, mnr Mbeki asook senior politieke leiers, om hul volgelinge asook die bevolking in die algemeen tot kalmte te maan en om die reg te respekteer. Terselfdertyd word wetsgehoorsame burgers aangemoedig om persoonlike veiligheid asook bewustheid van moontlike bedreigings, op te skerp.
