BIO DIESEL PROJECT ON THE MOVE

Mr Dries Joubert, Chairperson of TAU SA North, expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the bio diesel project.

PICK ‘N PAY VALUABLE PARTNER

Mr Joubert thanked Pick ‘n Pay for allowing members to collect old frying oils from various Pick ‘n Pay outlets in the northern region. Members of TAU SA North, through an approved security card system, are able to collect all the old frying oils plus chicken fat from the Pick ‘n Pay outlets.  All of the collected oil and fat are transformed into diesel. It is use in standard diesel vehicles at a fraction of the cost.

OIL SUPPLY PEAKED?

Mr Joubert said it will appear as if the supply of crude petroleum oil is at its peak. Constant price increases in the price of oil seems inevitable. He invites all members to start, albeit small, to substitute petroleum oil with alternatives such as bio diesel. There are alternatives to the energy needs of farmers but it will require some investment and clever planning. TAU SA North will continue to assist members in this regard.

ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY

The method is completely environmentally friendly. TAU SA North and Pick ‘n Pay proves their commitment to protecting the environment through this project. This is a true win-win situation where TAU SA North, Pick ‘n Pay and the environment win.

NOTIFICATION

TAU SA North provides a notification that used frying oils are obtained for industrial purposes only.  It is further declared that such oils will not be treated, used, processed or sold for human and animal consumption. This legal requirement tries to prevent unscrupulous dealers from filtering and bleaching old frying oil for resale to consumers. Reuse of such oil frying oil may be one of the causing agents of cancer.

NEXT MEETING

The next meeting of the ‘collection group’ takes place on Tuesday 27 February 2007.  During this meeting any problems with collection and other administrative issues will be on the agenda.

Mr Joubert said consumers can buy at Pick ‘n Pay knowing that the company is serious about the health of its customers, other consumers but also serious about the environment. This project is a wonderful example of quality cooperation between farmers and retail outlets with the environment as the ultimate winner.
